Recognition of prior learning

Don't waste time studying for skills you have already gained through years of work or life experience. We take into account your existing skills and knowledge so you can gain a trade qualification sooner.

There are two processes that we use to assess your skills:

  • RPL assessment for informal learning gained through work and life experiences, and/or
  • Credit transfer for formal studies i.e those done at school, TAFE or university.

The application process

Step 1: Obtain an RPL application pack. Contact us via phone on 1800 654 447 or via email on

Step 2: Complete your RPL application and submit by post, email or in person. Be sure to include your evidence. If you don't have sufficient documentary evidence your Assessor will rely more on questioning, referee validation and observing you demonstrate your skills.

Step 3: Pay your RPL assessment fee. A member of the Recognition Services Team will contact you within 48 hours of receiving your RPL application to confirm receipt of your application and to collect payment for your RPL assessment.  Full payment is due on receipt of your application.  Please be aware that this fee is non-refundable.   If your assessor identifies that you need further training in your RPL assessment you will be provided with a quote for additional fees. Refer to the TAFE Queensland Refund Policy for information on refund conditions.

Step 4: Once all fees are paid in full, your application will be assigned to an assessor. At your assessment, our Assessor will ask questions to gain further evidence of your skills and knowledge. At this stage, the Assessor will also contact any referees you have nominated. If a practical skills test is required, it can be arranged at your workplace or at one of our four training centres located in Brisbane.

Step 5: Following the assessment, our Assessor will provide feedback on your results. We'll let you know the units you were successful in attaining and any training you may still need to fill any gaps in order to achieve a whole qualification, or to attain the skill set you need for employment. If any further training is required you will be provided with available training options and the additional cost.

If you have any questions, please contact our friendly Client Service Centre staff.
