Skills Review

What is bksb?

Basic Key Skills Builder (bksb) is an approved online testing tool that TAFE Queensland SkillsTech uses to help determine your reading and maths levels within the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

We want to make sure you have the right skills and support to be successful in your trade. bksb Student Start Up Guide
To do this we ask that you undertake the approved bksb assessment so that we can immediately identify any areas that you may need to work on. Please be aware that if you are applying to access a VET Student Loan it is essential that you demonstrate competence at or above Exit Level 3 (i.e. working at level 4) in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) in both reading and maths.

The bksb has been designed to be easy to use and accessible to students anywhere, anytime, on any device. The online assessment provides students with:

  • an individual language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) report
  • interactive learning resources
  • a skills assessment against specific concepts

Read the bksb Student Start Up Guide for more information and to get started.

Who needs to complete the bksb assessment?

  • The majority of TAFE Queensland SkillsTech students undertaking full time study.
  • All TAFE Queensland SkillsTech students applying for a VET Student Loan that have not provided an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education that has been awarded to you by an agency or authority of a state or territory for the completion of year 12. It does not matter what year you completed this certificate, as long as you can produce a valid document.

Information Reminder - you will be unable to access a VET Student Loan if:

  • you cannot supply a valid Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education, or
  • you cannot supply a copy of your AQF Level IV or higher qualification, or
  • achieved a minimum of Exit Level 3 in the ACSF (in both reading and maths)
