  • Australian or New Zealand citizen/ permanent Australian resident/refugee, humanitarian or temporary visa holders
  • Permanently reside or be living in Queensland

Resources required

Students are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes, which include:

  • safety glasses - students must wear these at all times in the workshop or any eye hazard area as specified by the teacher
  • protective footwear - covered uppers, steel capped toes and non-slip shoes to AS2210
  • hand protection - long leather gloves to AS2161
  • hair protection - long hair (i.e. hair below collar length) must be restrained (hat, headband, or hair tie)
  • industrial type clothing (100% cotton drill).

Students failing to meet these minimum standards of dress will not be permitted entry in to practical classes. Students must also be equipped with a pen and notepad for theory training in the classroom.


This course is a maximum of 13 weeks, including one week application period, 11 weeks assessment period and one week to finalise assessment outcome documents

Important Information

The Trades Skills Assessment and Gap Training Program (the Program) is an opportunity for experienced individuals to get a formal trade qualification. It does this by:

  • assessing the skills of experienced individuals who can demonstrate substantial competency in a priority trade qualification
  • providing gap training of no more than one-third of the competencies to complete the trade qualification

Benefits to workers:

  • gap training options available
  • no cost involved for recognition of existing skills
  • Participants who complete the program will receive a nationally recognised qualification.

Benefits to employers:

  • increase supervision ratio for meeting apprenticeship requirements
  • increases worker knowledge, capability and productivity


To be awarded this qualification, competence must be demonstrated in 36 units of competency:

22  core units, plus
14  elective units, of which:

  • 1  unit must be chosen from one of the Specialist Elective Unit Groups A or B below
  • of the 13  remaining units required to make up the elective unit total:
  • up to 13  units may be chosen from the Specialist Elective Unit Group not already chosen and the General Elective Units listed below
  • up to 6  units may be chosen from a Certificate II qualification or above in this Training Package or another endorsed Training Package or accredited course, provided that the units chosen contribute to the vocational outcome of this qualification and do not duplicate the outcome of another unit chosen for the qualification.

Gap Training is a cost of $1.60 per nominal hour for each unit.

Department of Education and Training funding is available until 31 May 2018.

On successful completion of this course you receive AUR31116 - Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology.
