Kick start your future with a pre-apprenticeship

Develop the basic skills and knowledge needed to start your automotive career. This entry-level course will increase your employability as an apprentice. The automotive industry offers you the opportunity to get involved in a broad-based skills area driven by new technologies. Employment opportunities are emerging in specialised diagnostic, servicing, repair and maintenance roles.

This course will give you the skills to perform a range of tasks related to the service and repair of engine cylinder heads and other components of light or heavy vehicles. You will learn how to identify automotive faults and use a range of tools and equipment to complete basic inspection and service of automotive systems such as engines and cooling systems.

This course will set you on the path to finding an apprenticeship in a wide range of automotive occupations including as a light or heavy vehicle mechanic, an automotive electrician, or a diesel fitter. You may also seek employment as a vehicle service assistant or an automotive parts interpreter. Course details

Entry requirements

A sound achievement in Year 10 Mathematics and English or equivalent is recommended.

Sound hand skills or manual arts background is an advantage.

Personal Protective Equipment:

Important: During the training students must supply their own personal protective equipment. Students failing to meet required personal protective equipment standards of dress will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

The personal protective equipment will consist of:

  • Eye protection –Clear safety glasses, (tinted or sunglasses not acceptable). These must conform to the Australian Standard AS 1336 or 1337.
  • Protective footwear – Safety toe, leather upper, non-slip safety footwear must be worn. They must comply with Australian Standard AS2210 and be in good condition.
  • Protective clothing – Sleeved, 100% industrial cotton drill work wear must be worn at all times.
  • Ear Protection – Ear plugs or ear muffs.
  • Hand protection - Mechanics gloves.
  • Welding protection - to be advised at orientation. (Alexandra Hills only)


Acacia Ridge: part time, Monday and Tuesday 8.00 am - 4.45 pm and Wednesday 8.00 am - 12.00 pm. Orientation on the first day of class, students will meet at Q Block Foyer at 8.00 am. Please ensure you have your personal protective equipment, class materials and Confirmation of Enrolment with you.

Alexandra Hills: part time, Monday and Tuesday from 8:00am - 4:00pm with orientation on the first day of class.  Students will meet outside IH Block at 8.00 am.  Please ensure you have your personal protective equipment, class materials and Confirmation of Enrolment with you.


Non-compulsory work experience is offered to students who want to find their own placement.


The successful achievement of this course requires you to complete all 7 mandatory and  7 elective units from the list below.

This is the total cost of the course for students who do not qualify for a subsidy, or the course does not receive any subsidy.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.


The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.


You are eligible for the concession price of a course if you meet the eligibility requirements under the subsided costing and:

  • hold or are listed on an Australian Government Low Income Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card
  • are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • have a disability.

You will need to provide evidence at the time of enrolment.

On successful completion of this course you receive a AUR21516 - Certificate II in Automotive Cylinder Head Reconditioning qualification.
