Kick start your career in the automotive industry with this foundation qualification. This entry-level course will give you the confidence you need to seek an automotive apprenticeship.

The automotive industry offers the opportunity to get involved in a broad-based skills area driven by new technologies. Automotive employment opportunities are emerging in diagnostic, servicing, repair and maintenance roles across Australia.

In this course you will gain the basic skills and knowledge required to carry out workplace tasks safely and effectively. You will become familiar with electrical and mechanical components and systems and learn how to use appropriate tools and equipment to complete basic removal, inspection and refitting of automotive components.

This course will set you on the path to finding an apprenticeship in a wide range of automotive occupations including as a light or heavy vehicle mechanic, an automotive electrician, a diesel fitter or an outdoor power equipment technician. You may also like to seek employment as a vehicle service assistant or as an automotive parts interpreter. Course details

Resources required

  • Eye protection –Clear safety glasses, (tinted or sunglasses not acceptable). These must conform to the Australian Standard AS 1336 or 1337.
  • Protective footwear – Safety toe, leather upper, non-slip safety footwear must be worn. They must comply with Australian Standard AS2210 and be in good condition.
  • Protective clothing – Sleeved, 100% industrial cotton drill work wear must be worn at all times.

Students failing to meet these minimum standards of dress will not be permitted entry in to practical classes.


Wednesday and Thursday 8.00 am - 4.45 pm and
Friday 8.00 am - 12.00 pm with additional tutorials from 1.00 pm - 2.00 pm.


The successful achievement of this course requires you to complete all mandatory and elective units from the list below. These units form part of AUR20716 - Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation.

This is the total cost of the course for students who do not qualify for a subsidy, or the course does not receive any subsidy.

Payment Plan

If you have difficulty paying the full cost of a course up front you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.


The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

You can receive a subsidy towards one certificate III qualification from a list of eligible courses.

The amount provided depends on the demand for skilled workers in your chosen industry.

You're eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee if you:

  • are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • live in Queensland full time or intend to live in Queensland for the next 6 months
  • are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • don't currently hold (or are enrolled in) a certificate 3 or higher level qualification.
