This pre-apprenticeship is designed to give participants an introduction to an engineering or related working environment. Participants will gain skills and knowledge in the areas of engineering industry. The focus is on practical projects using engineering tools and equipment. Resources required

Personal protective equipment:

  • safety glasses - students must wear these at all times in the workshop or any eye hazard area as specified by the teacher
  • protective footwear - covered uppers, capped toe’s and non-slip shoes to AS2210
  • hand protection – long leather welding gloves to AS2161
  • hair protection - long hair (i.e. hair below collar length) must be restrained (hat, headband, or hair tie) within the workshop environment
  • protective clothing - overalls or long cotton trousers and a long sleeved cotton drill shirt are required to be worn at all times when undertaking practical training

Students failing to meet these minimum standards of dress will not be permitted entry in to practical classes.

TAFE QLD SkillsTech will provide each student with the following welding kit:

  • Welding Helmet
  • Oxy goggles
  • Welding Gloves

Timetable

Acacia Ridge: Monday to Friday 8.00 am - 4.00 pm. Non-compulsory “Work Experience” is offered to participants who wish to find their own placement. Work Experience is to take place on Weeks 5 and 6.

Bracken Ridge: Monday and Tuesday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm and Wednesday 8.00 am - 12.00 pm. Non-compulsory “Work Experience” is offered to participants who wish to find their own placement. Work Experience is to take place on Thursday and Friday.

Placement

Recommended, but not mandatory.

Payment Plan

If you are unable to pay the total cost of the course up front or not eligible for VET FEE-HELP (if applicable), you might be eligible for a payment plan. This will allow you to pay for your course in instalments, rather than one upfront payment at the time of enrolment.

Subsidised

The Queensland Government will offset the cost of study for eligible students. You will still need to pay for a portion of your study costs. The amount above is what you will need to pay.

Certificate 3 Guarantee

You can receive a subsidy towards one certificate III qualification from a list of eligible courses.

The amount provided depends on the demand for skilled workers in your chosen industry.

You're eligible for the Certificate 3 Guarantee if you:

  • are 15 years or older and no longer in school
  • live in Queensland full time or intend to live in Queensland for the next 6 months
  • are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or temporary resident with the necessary visa or work permits
  • don't currently hold (or are enrolled in) a certificate 3 or higher level qualification.

You are eligible for the concession price of a course if you meet the eligibility requirements under the subsided costing and:

  • hold or are listed on an Australian Government Low Income Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card
